The Handley Page Herald was a tough, reliable, feederliner that earned respect from all who flew it, but never gained the success it really deserved. This DVD uses the manufacturer’s cine film archive and modern digital video to bring you fascinating details of the Herald’s development and service history.

The Herald’s story starts in 1955, when it first flew with four piston engines. These were eventually replaced by two Dart turbo-props, to enable it to compete with the similarly powered Fokker F27 Friendship.

Handley Page then sent the Herald on several exacting sales tours to places as far apart as Peru and the Philippines. Fully restored cine film from the Company’s archives brings you Heralds in action on these trips, which include some interesting propliners in the background.

Subsequent operations with Sadia in Brazil, BEA in Scotland, Channel Express at Stansted and with various other operators including Bavaria, Globe Air and Itavia are also featured.

A mock up of the military HP124 with an upswept tail, rather like an Andover, is also shown, together with Malaysian and Jordanian Air Force Heralds.

A veteran pilot also gives a guided tour of the cockpit and flight instruments of a preserved Herald, providing a real insight into flying in an era well before today’s glass cockpits.
